Why We Celebrate Memorial Day
The unofficial start of summer is at hand, and with it comes Memorial Day! Memorial Day has been a holiday for our nation to honor those who gave their life to protect this country as far back as the Civil War. It is a time when we can all come together, and celebrate the life of each soldier who has fought to protect us.
Each man and woman in our armed forces have contributed to our way of life. Things like hot showers, and cold drinks of water, would not be possible without them. It’s also important to remember that during the Civil War, men who fought and died, were not even given these benefits.
Our way of life has been hard fought and won. On Memorial day, we pay tribute to the people that have made it possible. It is customary for us to decorate the graves and memorials of the soldiers who have come before us; to honor them. This is actually how the holiday first came to be.
It Started With Decoration Day
Memorial Day was once known as Decoration Day. Though the practice dates back before the end of the Civil War, it was a few years post war in 1868 that John A Logan declared May 30th as the day we would honor the fallen soldiers.
Families, friends, and communities would gather to decorate the memorials of the men at arms. As time passed, more and more communities, towns, and states participated in the holiday. Nonetheless, it was not until 1971 that Congress declared Decoration Day-now Memorial Day-a Federal holiday to be observed on the last Monday of May.
As the holiday gave us a long weekend, and it was so close to the beginning of the summer, communities also began to use the holiday as the start of the summer festivities. Along with the decoration of memorials, activities such as parades, barbeques, and parties have been added to the list of celebrations.
The Armed Forces
As the years of the Civil War fell behind us, our country’s conflicts and battles continued on different fronts.
As a nation, we depend on our strong armed forces to protect our way of life. Memorial Day is also a day to honor all the men and women who have given their life to give us our Democracy.
Each year, as Memorial day draws close, we remember the courageous men and women who serve in our military. It is because of the armed forces that we have freedom, liberty, and justice. It is important to remember all of the soldiers who have carried our flag into battle.
